Leela Prasaud is Patient and Family Advisor at North York General Hospital (NYGH) since 2014, and a member of The Patient and Family Advisory Council since 2016. In addition to her role at NYGH, Leela is a member of the Home and Community Care – Patient and Caregiver Advisory Table on the implementation of Patients First: A Roadmap to Strengthen Home and Community Care with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Leela is a passionate advocate for patient and family centred care, drawing on her experience as a caregiver for her 97-year-old mother who suffered from Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) while at home on palliative care. In her caregiver role, Leela had many interactions with hospitals, physicians, nurses, Community Care Access Centres and Personal Support Workers within the health care system in Ontario. As a Patient and Family Advisor, Leela has participated on many projects with staff at NYGH including: Integrated Funding Model for CHF and COPD Steering Committee, “Start with Heart” NYGH employee orientation, Diversity Working Group, and Discharge Planning Working Group.
